RMU Fraternity Wins Community Service Award

KDR BadgeKappa Delta Rho (KDR) is one of 12 Greek-letter social organizations at Robert Morris University. As with most Greek life organizations, the fraternity’s brothers participate in various community service opportunities and events.

Recently the brothers of RMU’s Eta Alpha Chapter won the George E. Kimball Award for outstanding community service, named for one of the fraternity’s founders.

“We put in over 600 hours in the 2012-13 school year and reached out to numerous organizations and people in need, while finishing with an average 3.3 GPA,” said Dwight Herb, junior KDR brother and the vice president of the Eta Alpha Chapter, who works alongside Isaac Swink, KDR community service chair, in setting up events and keeping track of them. “The brothers have done a number of community service events that has made an impact in the community.”

KDR, which emphasizes the values of fellowship, leadership, scholarship, service, and tradition, organizes and takes part in various community service events annually, including:

  • Brave the Shave – benefits the B+ Foundation.
  • Adaptive Sports – helps physically and mentally challenged children exercise.
  • I’ve Got you 6K – benefits the men in the service and the proceeds go to the VALOR Clinic Foundation.
  • St. Jude Walk at Mall of Robinson – promotes the awareness for the hospitals children research.
  • Palm Sales – helps the B+ Foundation as the brothers sell palms on Palm Sunday with Campus Ministry.

Each KDR chapter applies for national awards. The national officers then choose the winners out of all the chapters, based on what’s provided in each chapter’s per-semester assessment.
